MY GUT FEELS TIGHT FROM THIS LAUGHTER
There’s a lot of talk about the overwhelming whiteness and straightness of the Hogwarts population. But what are the numbers behind it?
Note: For this we are ONLY looking at STUDENTS at Hogwarts, described in the books, during Harry’s time there.
Let’s first talk about the demographics of the UK. According to the 2001 census, the racial demographics of the UK look like this:
So about 10% of the population (rounding) is non-white.
As far as LGBTQIA+ goes, this is tricky, because not all the studies agree. The Office of National Statistics survey found that 1.5 per cent of men say they are gay, 0.7 per cent of women say they are lesbian, and 0.4 percent of people identify themselves as bisexual. Keeping in mind that this does NOT account from Trans individuals, asexuals, and other members of the LGBTQIA+ community, we can place a number at about 3%. HOWEVER, studies done by the National Treasury concluded that the number was closer to 6%.
For our purposes, we will round these numbers to get an easy 5%.
So what about Hogwarts? Well, that’s tricky too.
Let’s assume for maths sake that there are 1000 students at Hogwarts (the number which JKR gave in a 2001 interview with scholastic.com) while Harry is in attendance and that the demographics for Hogwarts are roughly the same as they are in the UK as a whole. That would mean that there should be:
Race: 100 non-white students (Confirmed through in text descriptions we have Cho, Dean, The Patil Twins, Blaise, Lee, Angelina. That’s 7. There are a few more if we include movie and game characters/casting)
LGBTQIA+: 50 Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and “other” students. (Confirmed through in text descriptions: 0)
BUT, of course, we don’t have names for all 1000 assumed students here, so that’s not super helpful.
So how does this compare with the students we actually know during Harry’s time at Hogwarts? Well. According to the HP Lexicon:
Gryffindors has 26 named students that Harry attends school with. Ravenclaw has 18. Hufflepuff has 18. Slytherin has 19. And there’s 13 that don’t have a confirmed house.
That’s 94 named Hogwarts students.
With THOSE numbers, we should have between 9 and 10 PoC students, not the 7 (tertiary characters, not even main characters) that we have. And there should be at least 5 LGBTQIA+ students, and we have 0.
Not only are PoC under-represented, but look at those LGBTQIA+ numbers. No queer kids at the Yule Ball, or holding hands at Hogsmead, or snogging in the hallway, or going on dates to Quidditch teams. None. We should have at least 5, and we have none.
But ok, we don’t know about ALL the relationships of those 94 students, right? Harry isn’t a mind reader after all!
So which ones do we have confirmed romantic feelings for? Harry, Ron, Hermione, Cho, Luna, Ginny, Lavender, Cormac, Cedric, Neville, Dean, Michael, Roger, Fred, George, Percy, Angelina, Penelope, Hannah, Romilda, Draco, Pansy, Teddy, Viccy, Padma, Parvati, Lee, Seamus, Fawcett and Stebbins (who were kissing at the Yule ball) Thats 30, unless I’m forgetting someone.
With those numbers, at LEAST 1 or 2 of them should, statistically, have been visibly LGBTQIA+ to the readers. We got 0.
